Dutch Wonderland is often referred to as a “Kingdom for Kids.” As with many theme parks in the USA, it offers attractions, rides, and shows catering mainly to families with children. Whilst visiting the fascinating Amish Country here, you should spend at least one day, checking out this fun theme park. 

Tips for visiting Dutch Wonderland

Best Time to visit Dutch Wonderland

• By Month: As with many theme parks, you will want to find the sweet spot; when the weather is warm enough to enjoy the park but the crowds haven’t arrived yet. For Dutch Wonderland, we visited in April; it did rain a little during the morning of our visit but it was quiet enough to experience the whole park. April, May, September, and October are the ideal months to visit for the best weather but also avoid those school breaks.

• Weekdays vs. Weekends: Similar to other parks like Disneyland or Dollywood, weekdays tend to be quieter. For shorter lines and less crowded experiences, visit on weekdays. Weekends tend to be busier, especially during summer and holiday periods.

• By Season: When looking at tips for visiting Dutch Wonderland, it is worth comparing the seasonal experiences available. Dutch Wonderland operates from early spring through the end of October, with additional special events in November and December. There are celebrations throughout the year so check the calendar before you go; we are hoping to head back here for a Christmas visit next!

Where to stay near Dutch Wonderland

There are plenty of great places to stay near and around Dutch Wonderland, depending on what else you want to see and do in the area, so we share our favorite places in these tips for visiting Dutch Wonderland.

Amish View Inn & Suites: We LOVED staying at the Amish View Inn! It was ideal for seeing the Amish community and a close drive to plenty of the shops, restaurants, and attractions in the area. It was also an easy drive to and from the Dutch wonderland. It isn’t the closest hotel on this list but it does offer a wonderful charm if you want to experience Amish Country too. 

Lancaster Family Resort: This is the closest resort to the park and a great place to stay near Dutch Wonderland. You can walk between the hotel and the park, but the hotel also includes indoor and outdoor pools and complimentary breakfast. 

Fulton Steamboat Inn: Themed to resemble a 19th-century steamboat, this is a unique hotel, ideal for families. The rooms are spacious and the hotel includes an indoor pool, playground, and duck pong. There is also an excellent on-site restaurant that we enjoyed visiting, Huckleberry’s Restaurant & Tavern.

Fairfield Inn & Suites Lancaster East at the Outlets: For those wanting to shop during their trip, this is a great choice for you. Fairfield offers spacious rooms and complimentary breakfast but is also located right by the Tanger Outlets and not too far of a drive from Dutch Wonderland.

What to Wear for Dutch Wonderland

• Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes suitable for a day of walking and riding attractions. In summer, lightweight and breathable fabrics are ideal when thinking about these tips for visiting Dutch Wonderland.

• Footwear: Opt for comfortable walking shoes. Avoid flip-flops or high heels, as you’ll be on your feet most of the day.

• Prepare for the weather: Bring a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. Pack ponchos or rain jackets if rain is in the forecast.

Midday Breaks

• Rest and Recharge: Take a break during the peak midday hours when lines are longest. Find a shaded spot or head to Duke’s Lagoon for a refreshing cooldown. However, we do recommend heading to a restaurant around 11.15 am or 2.15 pm if you want to beat the rush for the restaurants.

• Indoor Attractions: Escape the heat by enjoying indoor shows or visiting the gift shops; these are great attractions between 12 – 3 pm. 

Evening Enjoyment

• Less Crowded: Late afternoon and early evening can be a great time to revisit favorite attractions with shorter lines so take this into account in these tips for visiting Dutch Wonderland.

Best things to do at Dutch Wonderland

There are plenty of fun rides and attractions for you and your family to enjoy, whilst at Dutch Wonderland. If you are visiting with younger children however, make sure to check the height requirements to avoid disappointment; this information is available on the park map and the theme park app.

• Good ‘N Plenty Restaurant (5 minutes from Dutch Wonderland): A popular family-style restaurant offering traditional Pennsylvania Dutch comfort food.

• Isaac’s Craft Kitchen & Brewery (5 minutes from Dutch Wonderland): This local favorite serves up delicious sandwiches, salads, and brews in a fun, family-friendly environment.

• Auntie Anne’s Pretzels (Inside Dutch Wonderland): Enjoy fresh, hand-rolled soft pretzels with classic and seasonal flavors from this chain spot in the park.

• Dienner’s Country Restaurant (8 minutes from Dutch Wonderland): This is one of our favourite spots nearby; during our recent trip to Lancaster, we were here often! Expect traditional Amish flavors with an a la carte menu or buffet to choose from; you will want to go fo the buffet!

• Lancaster Brewing Company (7 minutes from Dutch Wonderland): Known for its craft brewery, this restaurant has a wide menu of American-style food, from burgers to flatbreads, and local beers.

• Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord (10 minutes from Dutch Wonderland): Dive into an authentic Amish-style buffet with a variety of hearty and homemade dishes.

• Miller’s Smorgasbord (10 minutes from Dutch Wonderland): An all-you-can-eat, farm-to-table buffet with a massive selection of Pennsylvania Dutch dishes.

• DJ’s Taste of the 50’s (5 minutes from Dutch Wonderland): This is a 50s-style diner serving classic American fare, with burgers, milkshakes, and nostalgic decor.

• Fireside Tavern (15 minutes from Dutch Wonderland): A cozy spot known for steaks, seafood, and comfort food in a relaxed, rustic setting.
